Nineteen days following the city's centennial, Hurricane Katrina struck the city on August 29, 2005, destroying more than 90% of all buildings along the Gulf of Mexico. Hurricane Katrina damaged over 40 Mississippi libraries, partially destroying the Long Beach Public Library, beyond repair, requiring a total rebuild.[1] Long Beach is located at 3021'9" North, 899'35" West (30.352547, -89.159639)GR1.
According to the United States Census Bureau, before Hurricane Katrina, the city had a total area of 26.7 km (10.3 mi). 26.2 km (10.1 mi) of it was land and 0.5 km (0.2 mi) of it was water. The total area was 1.85% water. Current statistics are not available. As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 17,320 people, 6,560 households, and 4,696 families residing in the city. The population density is 661.5/km (1,713.6/mi). There were 7,203 housing units at an average density of 275.1/km (712.6/mi). The racial makeup of the city was 87.49% White, 7.36% African American, 0.39% Native American, 2.57% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.68% from other races, and 1.44% from two or more races. 2.29% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
